What are Dental Sealants?
The sealants that we apply in our office are BPA-free resin material applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves of teeth where most tooth decay occurs. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing these deep grooves, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface. Teeth with sealants are at a far less risk for getting a cavity.
What is the procedure for sealants?
There is no drilling required to apply a sealant; it is simply painted on after the tooth has been cleaned. The tooth is isolated with cotton and air, polished, conditioned and rinsed, and then the sealant is placed and feathered into the microscopic grooves. Finally, it is cured (hardened) with an LED light.
There are no contraindications for getting a sealant and, not only are they painless to place, they can help to avoid future fillings on the biting surfaces of the teeth.
Sealants can last, on average 5 years, but should be check during regular dental hygiene appointments. At Perfect Smiles, we warranty them for 2 years (Click Here for Warranty).
At Perfect Smiles, our goal is always to prevent decay before it happens. This is especially important for our youngest patients. One of the best preventative measures a parent can make for their child is to have their hygienist apply dental sealants to their teeth (including baby teeth if necessary). Sealants are not just for children, however, they are for anyone who has back teeth that do not have fillings on them.
